Meet Eh Laydan Htoo. I forgot to post this earlier but she is the newest addition to the Htoo family. She was born last month and she is so tiny. It's a shame that I can't photograph her growing up like I was planning to. Who knows.. maybe the Htoos will move back to Austin. The rest of the Htoo's family will still be here and I plan on photographing them still.
This morning when I went to visit the Htoo family, I found out that they decided to move to Vernon, TX. My heart dropped when I heard the news and thought maybe they were joking. But it's real. They're moving to Vernon because Austin have gotten so expensive for them and Or Or will make more money on the Tyson farm in north Texas. They will be gone in two weeks, I am devastated... but they said that I can drive up there to visit them. It's a 6 hours drive.
Kayler told me that he will miss me because I am his only visitor. I went on my first outing with the Htoo family after four years of documenting them. We went to an open air Mexican Market, 812 Market outside of Austin. What an experience!
There were 25 young entrepreneurs and leaders from 18 countries across Africa. The YALI Network is part of President Obama’s signature effort to invest in the next generation of African entrepreneurs, educators, activists and innovators.
I got to shoot Pachanga Fest for NPR Music Alt.Latino and it was such a fun festival. It was fun hanging out with Felix, Jasmine, and Jessica. Here is Felix Contreras, co-host of Alt.Latino interviewing Dicken Schrader from DMK. They are this adorable trio of father and his daughter and son.
I've been working on my long-term photo documentary project on the Htoo family for the past four years. I started this project in graduate school to capture the assimilation of Burmese refugees. I've continued to photograph the Htoo family well past my school project and now I am not sure what the project has turned into because they have assimilated pretty well.
When I am not traveling, I go their house on Sundays and just spend a few hours hanging with the kids or taking photos. I am so grateful that they welcomed me into their lives and the least I can return is give them prints.
Paw Htoo Raw, the mother recently gave birth to a baby girl. This photo was from April 2014 where she is still pregnant. With the recent addition of a baby girl to their family, I feel like this is a new phase in their lives. I've decided to show the color of their lives now that they've assimilated. I will be posting photos from my Sundays with the Htoo Family here on my blog going back from April to present day.
Grandma Htoo. Or Or's mother recently moved in with her family in Austin.
The boys were nervous about the arrival of their baby sister because they would have to help care for her.
