Sundays with the Htoos: June 29, 2014 by Lizzie Chen

Meet Eh Laydan Htoo. I forgot to post this earlier but she is the newest addition to the Htoo family. She was born last month and she is so tiny. It's a shame that I can't photograph her growing up like I was planning to. Who knows.. maybe the Htoos will move back to Austin. The rest of the Htoo's family will still be here and I plan on photographing them still.

Sundays with the Htoos: July 27, 2014 by Lizzie Chen

This morning when I went to visit the Htoo family, I found out that they decided to move to Vernon, TX. My heart dropped when I heard the news and thought maybe they were joking. But it's real. They're moving to Vernon because Austin have gotten so expensive for them and Or Or will make more money on the Tyson farm in north Texas. They will be gone in two weeks, I am devastated... but they said that I can drive up there to visit them. It's a 6 hours drive.  Kayler told me that he will miss me because I am his only visitor. I went on my first outing with the Htoo family after four years of documenting them. We went to an open air Mexican Market, 812 Market outside of Austin. What an experience!

Young African Leaders Initiative by Lizzie Chen

Today the Young African Leaders Initiative Network came to Southwest Key Programs to help out at our monthly mobile food pantry in partnership with Capital Area Food Bank of Texas. There were 25 young entrepreneurs and leaders from 18 countries across Africa. The YALI Network is part of President Obama’s signature effort to invest in the next generation of African entrepreneurs, educators, activists and innovators. I love my job. You can see my slideshow here.

Alt.Latino NPR by Lizzie Chen

I got to shoot Pachanga Fest for NPR Music Alt.Latino and it was such a fun festival. It was fun hanging out with Felix, Jasmine, and Jessica. Here is Felix Contreras, co-host of Alt.Latino interviewing Dicken Schrader from DMK. They are this adorable trio of father and his daughter and son.  You can see my slideshow here.

DC/NYC by Lizzie Chen

Nathan and I took a short vacation to DC and NYC to visit friends and to reminisce over D.C.  This is at the National Zoo, perhaps my favorite zoo and I got to see the baby panda.

We finally got to eat at Shake Shack, they had the best veggie burger ever. It was a fried portobello mushroom stuffed with cheese. Our vacation was mainly an eating vacation.

Bwet Too sitting down for dinner. In Burmese culture, they traditionally eat on the ground with their hands.

Sundays with the Htoos: April 17 2014 by Lizzie Chen

I've been working on my long-term photo documentary project on the Htoo family for the past four years. I started this project in graduate school to capture the assimilation of Burmese refugees. I've continued to photograph the Htoo family well past my school project and now I am not sure what the project has turned into because they have assimilated pretty well.   When I am not traveling, I go their house on Sundays and just spend a few hours hanging with the kids or taking photos. I am so grateful that they welcomed me into their lives and the least I can return is give them prints.  My original black and white images "Strangers in A New Land" has been published in several media including Texas Observer. A gallery of select images are currently housed at the Asian American Resource Center. It was written about in The Daily Texan. It's been in different photo shows. Paw Htoo Raw, the mother recently gave birth to a baby girl. This photo was from April 2014 where she is still pregnant. With the recent addition of a baby girl to their family, I feel like this is a new phase in their lives. I've decided to show the color of their lives now that they've assimilated. I will be posting photos from my Sundays with the Htoo Family here on my blog going back from April to present day.
